Exfoliating + tanning = "safe"?

I know tanning isn't the best of things to do for your skin, but if I use sun block and only go for 3~5 minutes a week it shouldn't bee too bad, right?

Anyways, the question is, if I'm doing dermabrasion every day (dermabrasion crystals with lotion/water rubbed to remove bumps), will this make my skin more sensitive to tanning? Dermabrasion would be removing much of the "horny layer" of skin, so I assume its not a good idea to tan while using daily exfoliation, but I figured I'd ask to see if it is OK to tan while exfoliating (just as "safe" as tanning while not exfoliating).

Re: Exfoliating + tanning = "safe"?

I did it in the summer. I would go to get a base tan. Then keep it up while in my pool. Now I think with all of the AHA I will try self tanner. I'm 34 and I hate being in the pool in the sun, it really bothers me. I really think age does it to a person. When I was younger I would be at the beach at 9am till 4 pm. Today I sit under an umbrella the entire day.

A little sun is healthy for the skin. 3-4 minutes 2-3 times a week will give you adequate Vit. D and has other benefits. Use sun block if you use AHA.

Re: Exfoliating + tanning = "safe"?

Hi, Chris -

I have not heard or experienced skin to be more vulnerable to sun damage when you exfoliate, but my skin is tough and seems to tolerate aggressive treatment. Several years ago I spent a summer tanning every day and scrubbing twice a day with a loofah, and my k.p. completely cleared up. I had to give up the treatment because I was concerned about sun damage, and have not yet found something that works as well.

I don't think I ever got sunburned from the combination of exfoliation and tanning, but I really had to tan the heck out of my skin to get the effect. This could be just me - others seem to report that a few minutes in the sun here and there helps them.

Good luck!

I wouldn't recommend using microdermabrasion + sun. Skin gets vulnerable.

For some this may work for some time, because like newday says, you got to have tough skin that can handle this abuse.

The damage you can get combining chemical treatments + sun for some people are not evident at first.

If you are using AHA, please do not expose to sun.

I agree with Elsa Zoe, the microdermabrasion would definitely make your skin more vulnerable to the sun because you're removing the protective top layer of your skin. The sun will then be able to "penetrate" deeper. If you want to tan, I'd suggest waiting a few days after you've done the microdermabrasion and apply a high SPF lotion.

I know this for a fact because I made the stupid mistake of shaving my legs prior to a day at the beach. I got the WORST sunburn and ever since then I never lay out without thinking about that and what may come of it later in life.

Please be cautious.

Re: Exfoliating + tanning = "safe"?

Thanks for the answers guys. I'm not going to tan while exfoliating, because I'd much rather be safe then sorry. I'll take KP over skin cancer.

I'll be starting exfoliation as soon as my dermabrasion crystal come in the mail, and I'll be finished using them in probably 2 months or less, since my "bumps" aren't that big, or that hard, the crystals (should) scrub them away pretty easily. After that I plan to start using Glycolic Acid lotion in an appropriate percentage to keep my KP at bay, and heal up what's there.

I'd like to get some color, so if I do 3~5 minutes a week or so at a tanning salon, I'll be sure to cover myself in sunblock. I think I'll only get a tan if the "dots" take more then 4 months to go away, and I'll be very careful and reasonable with the amount of time I tan. By the time I'm 2 months into the Glycolic it'll be almost Summer anyways, so I might be able to sun tan! *hates Rhode Island weather*

Mhm. Its kind of embarrassing, but I definitely will, so I have some proof of my results. We all have KP here so its not like anyone's gonna be grossed out by what I have, lol. I should get some pics up ASAP anyways because I want to get an opinion from others on how bad my KP actually is.
