What's the life span of a leg hair?
Seriously, does anyone know?
We often say "give any new treatment 6 weeks" since it takes at least that long to grow a new epidermal layer I guess BUT I have areas that have had no hair for years and now they have been growing hairs but then KP plugs come out with them when they finally fall out. This is mostly concentrated on my calves. I have one to three whitehead-like plugs a day for the last couple of months and I'm a little tired of it. But it does seem like what is happening is that a hair finally grows out of a follicle (where it hasn't seen daylight for years) and as it falls out it brings a big chunk of keratin/sebum with it. not just a little follicle stuff but size of a grain of sand. anyone else have this after dietary treatment for a while? Thanks - bd |

Re: What's the life span of a leg hair?
ok, I did the wikipedia lookup:
"Individual hairs alternate periods of growth and dormancy. During the growth portion of the cycle, hair follicles are long and bulbous, and the hair advances outward at about a third of a millimeter per day. After three to six months, body hair growth stops (the pubic and armpit areas having the longest growth period). The follicle shrinks and the root of the hair grows rigid. Following a period of dormancy, another growth cycle starts, and eventually a new hair pushes the old one out of the follicle from beneath." So, three to 6 months may be a time period for us to see results in some of the hairy parts of our body. Argh! but this would explain why my calves are taking so long to clear - they have only been pushing out plugs for 4 months so I guess I can expect 2 more months of this since I didn't even HAVE hair on my legs hardly at all before I started EFAs and sugar scrubbing. luckily I can ease some of the painful whiteheads (that were boils in the first months or 2 of treatment) with tea tree oil topically. or my ear oil (wally's ear oil - eucalyptus, tea tree, and more...). Also salicylic acid helps too but I don't have any right now. - bd |

BD,
Did you google "hair life span"? Most of the web sites talk about head hair, but this one is interesting because of its reference to keratin. Weird & Wonderful Hair Facts kebod |
