Laser Hair Removal?

Some people have reported that upon having laser hair removal to remove unwanted hair from parts of their bodies have accidentally discover that it also gets rid of their KP. Keratois Pilaris, a genetic disorder, is caused when dead skin cells or keratin is trapped in the upper hair part of the hair follicles.

It is from the observation on my own body that my KP bumps are generated when new hair starts growing in new areas of my body. As I get older, I realize that new hair and KP are developing in different parts of the body that were once smooth and KP free.

The first sign of a new hair growth appears with a small red bump that steadily grows like a tiny volcano. When this erupts, it releases a rough white substance which is the keratin or the dead skin cells that starts coming loose as the coiled piece of hair pushes it out of the body. It is at this time when the portions of my body that have KP feel rough like Braille.

The dead skin cells get attached only to the fine tip of new hair as this comes out in a coiled manner. This fully detaches ones the hair starts fully growing and increases in thickness and length. The process can be accelerated by exfoliation; removing the dead skin from the hair line before it naturally grows out by itself. Once the hair starts its growth the red bump begin to minimize. With time, the bump subsides until no bump is left but a red or brown scar around the hair follicles. Sometimes, at least in my case, hair follicles grow parallel or very close to each other which makes the certain part of the area seem like it is has a never ending case of kp bumps.

It appears that in my case the hair on my legs has pretty much achieved full growth. I have very hairy legs and the hair is thick which covers pretty much the KP scars leftover from developmental stage. I am also Latino and my legs tan pretty easily, which further hides the kp spots. I have also noticed that the lower portion of my arms and hands, which were full off KP when I was younger have very few bumps left as the hair is now fully grown and mature. The spots have naturally faded away for the most part as my arms get a pretty descent amount of sunlight exposure. And again because I am latino, my arms have that tanned color which fades the kp into hardly noticeable. However, new KP areas have appeared in other parts of my body, which makes me believe that I am going to be a very hairy person in the future. I am now 27, but this hair is still growing in certain areas of the body.

My question is: Would Laser hair removal eliminate the KP problem? Upon checking my out my legs for the development of new KP, I noticed something strange. I noticed that right above my feet I have a few spots that are hair free. I presume that it has to do with the heat produced from putting on socks, which has killed the hair follicles and so no hair growth is apparent like it on my other parts of upper legs. These places have no KP noticeable because there is no hair growth, unlike all other parts of my legs which have hair and the KP scars. Would this be further evidence that if there is no hair, then there is no KP either. If that is the case then laser hair removal should be the trick? Please share your comments, thoughts, and experiences.

Question

I've wondered the same thing. I have a large hair-free, KP-free spot on the front side of both of my lower legs. I know I didn't get them from heavy sock use though, because 1) I almost never wear socks, and 2) these hair-free areas are too high on the leg to have been caused by socks. Interesting phenomenon... I wish I had the money for laser hair removal!

Curious

I too have large hair-free, KP-free patches on both of my lower legs. They're in approximately the same spot on both legs. Does anyone else have these hair-free places. What could this mean?

Question

I've often wondered that, as well. And what about electolysis? Hmm.. It does seem hair-free places are also kp-free places (i.e. the under side of arms & legs). But, of course, that theory doesn't work for people who have kp on their bottoms or face). If I had the money, I would try laser or electrolysis.

Ah, but we do have baby fine hairs on our bottoms and faces. Uh, or am I the only one?

I actually tried laser on my arms but I didn't see any improvement so I quit. It may have worked if I'd gone longer but it's really expensive and I didn't want to spend any more money unless I saw some promise. The nice thing though, is that my underarms are now nearly hair free!!

If the hair follicle is destroyed by the laser then you are correct that you will no get KP there. If it is not completely destroyed and damage so that the hair comes back thin and white you can still have some problems in that area.

There are other things to consider with laser hair removal. You can get scarring from the damage by the laser. It looks similar to the dark spot scars from KP. The more mixed race skin you have the more difficult it is to predict skin reaction and scarring. You would need to do several test patches around on your body.

You must make sure that the laser operator is very knowledgable about skin and can tailor a treatment to your skin type. Then of course as you know the faster they can work the more money that they bring in for the business.

I would say if you are going to do it then go to a place that can have variable rates based on time rather than cost per treatment area.

Re: Laser Hair Removal?

I have been seriously considering buying one of the home laser machines which are on sale here in the UK for the purpose of improving my KP. Desperately seeking somethng to improve my "plucked chicken" KP appearance on my legs so one day I might have the confidence to wear skirts!

Re: Laser Hair Removal?

hi friends,

i want to share some information about laser hair removal with you.

The primary principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis. Lasers can cause localized damage by selectively heating dark target matter in the area that causes hair growth while not heating the rest of the skin. Light is absorbed by dark objects, so laser energy can be absorbed by dark material in the skin (but with much more speed and intensity). This dark target matter, or chromophore, can be naturally-occurring or artificially introduced.
