KP and Underactive Thyroid
Hi everyone,
I suffered from KP for many years (as long as I can remember). Worst areas were pretty classic - backs of upper arms, thighs, my back, buttocks with some spots on my chest and stomach. The condition was always worse in the winter and used to itch incredibly whenever I did any kind of a workout (which worked up a sweat). I made the rounds of numerous dermatologists over the years - I received varying degrees of sympathy, salacylic acid creams etc etc. Nothing worked...really. In my late 40's I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (caused in my case by an auto-immune condition called Hashimoto's thyroiditis). I was prescribed thyroid hormone supplements and within roughly a month noticed my skin was beginning to improve. At this point (4 years later), my KP is virtually gone! Has this happened to anyone else? Could it be coincidence? Does this suggest that perhaps some people with KP should be screened for thyroid disease (a simple blood test). Hope this info is of help to someone else out there!!! |

wow, lucky you! i also need to take thyroid medicine, but saw no change in my kp after taking it regularly. i've now taken it for many years, and my kp is as bad as ever, so i doubt that is "it."

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps the improvement was simply coincidence. Others say KP can improve over time. I recently turned 50, so perhaps there is some reward for the arrival of middle age!!
