Staph Infection

I just got back from the dermatologist and he concluded that some of the bumps on my arm that are raised are due to a staph infection. Has anyone else run into this? These staph infections may be what are leading to the scars on my arms. I also get large red bumps on my neck tha are also tender to the touch and I am thinking that these also may be staph infections. I was given an antibiotic to treat them and was wondering if anyone else had any success or has had this issue. All posts welcome.

Normal KP is down to the keratine inflamation etc.. (i thnk) and normally has no connection with staph.

Is your treatment working?

Hi Bab,
I have had KP since I was a toddler and Since adolesence have had raised bumps that often have a substance within them that resembles a pimple. Dermatologists have told me this is one of the many sypmtoms of KP and/or folicalitis and not abnormal for sufferers, no derm has ever called it a staff infection. The only reason why I question if this is not normal is because others on the web seem to not experience the blocked folicals and raised bumps like we do. Let me know if you have any luck with the antibiotic, but they tried it on me when I was younger and it didn't help.

Have you found anything that has worked on your raised bumps so far. Do your bumps tend to scar? My arms are not really bumpy at all, and lack the goosebump charatcteristic, although they have a red pigment to them, but the only thing really noticeable are the large bumps. I wonder if the same treatments for everyone else's KP will work for us as well or if there is another way to cure our condition.

They only scar if I pick at them, which is a terrible habit. SO far the only thing that has worked well for me is time and hormonal changes. My derm told me by age 30 I should notice a major imporvement (great.) I might try this Oil Pulling thing everyone is talking about. Let me know how your antibiotics work.

Bab9611-What antibiotic did your doctor put you on?

I haven't been on this site for a long time, because my daughter's KP has become so minimal and barely noticeable, but your post caught my eye. She was put on the cephalexin antibiotic and I believe it made an overall difference in her KP.

Last September the backs of her legs got a bad rash (non-itchy) that I couldn't get under control. The walk-in clinic diagnosed it as impetigo which occurs when staff or strep bacteria get under the skin and flourish (apparently it is pretty common in kids under 6). They said cephalexin is the best antibiotic for under-the-skin infections.

At the time the impetigo occurred, her KP was minimal on her face and arms, but what was there, was red and raised. After about 1-1/2 days on the antibiotic, she broke out in itchy rash almost everywhere - some looked like bad KP and some didn't, but was different from the impetigo rash. Her doctor gave me steriod cream to get her though it. After about a week, a different kind of rash started occurring which a dermatologist said he felt was an allergic reaction to cephalexin.

Well, after we finished the antibiotic, and she healed up, the KP she has remaining is no longer red. And since all of this occurred, her KP has not flared up anywhere. The only bumps (colorless) she has are what were left after her course of antibiotics. They have not seemed to improve nor get worse. I'm hoping they slough off in time and we are finally done with KP. And as scary as it was watching her go through several different rashes, in hindsight, I almost wish she had been on the cephalexin a couple of days longer.

In my daughter's case, the redness of the bumps was, IMHO, definitely caused by some bacteria (staph, strep or something else), that the cephalexin knocked out. I just hope it got it all and it doesn't slowly start to spread again.

My antibiotic is sulfameth/trimthoprim. I just started taking it a couple of day ago though. Not sure if your daughter and I have the same kind of KP, but I will keep you updated on my progress
