Exclamation I have finally found something that works for me

Let me start by saying that I have had KP since I was born. I had smooth skin for about the first 3 months of my life (I'm 18 now), and then my KP starting showing up. It was never visible untill around 7th grade. My arms, legs and face were never red, but the bumps on them were awful. And not only did I have KP I had/have folliculitis. 10th grade I became very depressed and started picking at bumps. The picking has left me with horrible scars, that I'm very ashamed of.

Well a few weeks ago I went back to my dermatologist and asked her what my next step was to get rid of my KP. After looking down the list of the medications I've taken and the lotions I used she said she had no idea what to do anymore. I've taken everything from Accutane, to 3 other type of pills, and probably 20 different lotions since I was in 10th grade. Which was 4 years ago. I looked at her almost in tears as she aplogized for not knowing what to do. The problem I've always had is everything I've used will work really well in the begininng, but then I get to this plateau where whatever I'm using just stops working. I was on accutane for 6 or 7 months and it worked great at first, but after the 5th month it just stopped working. The last lotion my derm prescribed for me was called Cerovel. It worked so well at first, but then same thing happened, and I got to the plateau where I wasn't seeing results.

I asked my derm what I can do now, and she said to use a buff puff and a really good oil free moisturizer. I was using Cocoa Butter and it was clogging my pores really badly, and making my kp 150% worse! As soon as she said an oil free moisturizer I automatically started feeling better, because that was on of the reason my kp wasn't going away. I asked her what the best lotion I could get was and she said Keri. Well that day I went and bought a huge bottle of it. I started applying it every night right before bed and was notcing that my skin was getting aot smoother, not so much the bumps bu my skin felt amazing. At that time I had stopped using the bugg puff like I normall would and was just rubbing it around not doing any scrubbing. Well last Saturday, after 3 weeks of applying Keri religiously, I decided it was time to do some heavy duty exfoliating. So for about 30 min. straight I scrubbed every where I had Kp, my arms, legs (front, back, and sides) face, butt and hips. I put the lotion on like normal and didn't feel any difference that night, but when I woke up my bumps on my arms were 95% better, the bumps on my legs were 80% better, my butt is 98% better and my hips are 75% better. I dont use Keri on my face, but after seeing what it has done for the rest of my body I might start. Now I just need a way to get rid of my scars for good and I'll be back to wearing tank tops and shorts again! I woke up that day amazed! I ran up to my mom's room in tears and had her feel my skin nd she looked at my like I had a new body on with the same face. Nothing i have ever tried has worked this well.

You can buy Keri at any store for cheap. My bottle is 15 oz. and was $7.99.
The actual ltion is got is called Keru Advanced Mositure Therapy, Enriched Oil Free Formula, Extra Dry Skin Lotion. This lotion is definitely something you should try before you go out and spend tons of money on different treatments! If you'd like to see pictures just send me an email at AllyMe88@hotmail.com . I only have one before pic but you can definitely tell the severity of my kp on my arms in it.

Yes, heavy-duty physical exfoliation can clear up even pretty severe KP. But it is a hell of a lot of work if you have a lot of surface area to treat.

Before I found AHA, I used microdermabrasion crystals and scrubbed my legs daily for a few weeks straight. It did get rid of all the bumps and most of the red dots. Some days I would use a loofah and just rub it really hard, and that would maintain the results as well.

Yeah, that was my routine, too. It took about 30 minutes a day to do both legs, and they got smoother and softer every time. By the end of it, they were soft as silk and I only had red dots on the most serious areas where the KP had been.
However, this routine quickly became a prison for me. I discovered that if I got lazy and didn't do it for a few days to a week, and then started up again? I got horrible ACNE all over both legs. It was horrendous. There is something that happens when you exfoliate that aggressively when the skin is at a particular stage in its refoliation. It somehow interrupts the process and it caused all my pores to become clogged and infected. If I continued the scrubbing over the next few days, the acne would get even worse. (This was serious, peeps. I mean there was a big pimple or a whitehead about every quarter inch, ALL over the legs. It looked unbelievable !!)

I spent hours just picking at it and staring at it, it was so shocking to look at.
(I don't know if this is a phenomenon unique to microdermabrasion, or if it applies to all forms of mechanical exfoliation.)

Then gradually it would heal up and the smoothness and clear skin would return.

However, I realized that this method was just not practical. It is not something most people will be able to stick to for long term KP treatment. Investing half an hour into *anything* every day becomes a huge, tiring commitment, despite how well it works. It felt like I was a slave to my skin.
I had my fill of it after about 2 months.

But, if you just have KP over a small area, like just on the backs of your arms, you could probably stick with this over the long haul and be happy with it. Like ACE showed us some while ago, she was able to commit to it and keep her KP away with aggressive physical exfoliation alone. But for those of us with KP all over the place, it is not a very user-friendly option.

It was through this experience that I learned that exfoliation was the key, though, and that if one can find a chemical exfoliant that will do all the work for you without causing irritation, that can be the answer.

For me, too, this was the first affordable, non Rx treatment for KP that really worked for me, so it was pretty exciting for a while.

Ally, please will you post the pics here? use a photo server like photbucket.

Also, how do you exfoliate? I have this shower exfoliator stuff, that i use for ~3-5 min and does nothing.

I didn't know that I had posted this twice! Here are the before and after pictures. The After picture is a little blurry, but you can see the change in redness. I also wish you could see how smooth my arms are now. The pink spots in the after picture are all where I have been picking. I hate that I do it, but it's a habit I cannot shake! The 3rd picture is from this summer when I was going to the tanning bed to tan over my scars. You can hardly even see my KP, and thats when I wasn't using the Keri lotion so I think next summer it will look even better because my arms will finaly be smooth!

Hi Alley,

Thank you for positing your results. I can see that you wear tank tops!, I try to as well, because I don't want my life to be ruled by some skin thing, and try to forget it.. but then I'll be going on with my day, and somebody will stare or ask, and that's when it gets to me .. and I just want to hide and cry...

Anyway, I use Neostrata 15% but kind of had that same effect of working great in the beginning and then hitting the plateu.

I break out sooo easily, so I'm very skeptical about regular lotions. What is your treatment like? morning and night? after shower?.

Thanks!

Yes, this past summer was the first time i had worn tank tops in about 5 years! Im still not confident to wear a tank top without being really tan and what not.

Anyways, I shower everynight and let my skin dry about 80% then I just rub in the Keri lotion before bed. And I only exfoliate on Saturday and Wednesdays. I've always been very skeptical as well. Just because my skin looks bad already, I dont want to damage myself anymore! If you have any more questions, please let me know!

Hi,

first of all, I have to say too, that you are really pretty!
From what I could see from the first (before) photo, I think that my kp is quite alike and I would love to achieve the same results as you! Is this treatment still working for you? Mostly I'm interested in redness, which is the greatest issue for me. How do your arms look like when you are not tanned for example?

thnx!

Hi miserable,

Thank you Using the Keri lotion has helped alot, and is still working for me. When I am not tanned I have alot of white spots, which are scars from picking) and also alot of darker spots. I've been told that the darker spots look like weird freckles, except in patches. I'll try and get another photo up of me un-tanned.

How do you exfoliate (in the shower? dry?), because there are different theories about this.

So to make a fair study on myself, I started exfoliating one arm and not the other. And the one where I exfoliated, broke out a bit more with very tiny bumps... I did it with a piece of cloth right after the shower, when skin is a bit easier to come off.

Anyway, I don't know if exfoliating is good or not, or maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Also, I tan a lot...so I always have like old darker skin... oh yeah, gorgeous!

I exfoliate in the shower, with a buff puff and Neutrogena acne clearing scrub (I dont think the scrub does anything for my kp, doesn't make it better or worse) I never exfoliate my skin when it's dry, too painful I would think. And once a month I put on Queene Helene Mint Julep Mask to my arms. It kinda clears all the impurities.

I also have tiny bumps, but my derm. told me it was folliculitis. Which is where the hair follicules become aggravated, that may be from using the buff puff, but when I dont use it the bigger bumps came back. I haven't not used the buff puff while using the Keri ltion, though. That might be something I try next.

When I do exfoliate I just go in circular patterns for 3-5 second on each section of my arm.
