new member HI! keratosis pilaris??
Wow! I am 26 years old and have been embarrased about this "disease" for my whole life. I have been to several doctors who have never given me a name and dermatologist who seemed like they had never seen this before.
I can't believe that this group really exsists. I have had these white bumps since I can remeber on the backs of my arms and thighs. I remember childhood friends trying to pick them off and pop them when I was young. For some reason when I go down to FL. they seem to diminish for a short time - I think it may be the salt water... Anyway, It seems like it has gotten much worse since I had my baby or maybe since I've been breastfeeding for 8 months. Then, I noticed that she might be getting it too and that really bothers me. I have tried to search this before but a few years back, and have never really found any info. I never even new it had a name. I am going to try the coconut oil swishing thing and I have read also on webmd that 3% salicylic acid with Carmol 20 is supposed to work. I am just glad that I don't have to feel completly ashamed and like a total freak about this anymore. I hope I can find something that helps. |

I'm new too!
Hi, I'm 28 years old and just found this website last night while trying to find info on kp. I've had it since I was little and have noticed that my kp has gotten worse as I've gotten older. It's gotten so bad that I don't wear short sleeves or shorts ever. I don't like to wear skirts or dresses either for that reason. I have it on 75% of my body. I don't feel like a woman anymore...more like a monster. I envy every woman AND man that I see with soft, smoothe skin...including my husband. He has the skin of a baby.
I also have a few other problems in addition to the kp which makes me that much more self conscious about my skin. I am a very hairy person and have extremely dry skin in addition to the kp. The hair on my arms and legs is very coarse. Just trying to shave makes my kp irritated and causes a lot of ingrown hairs. Not shaving makes my skin itchy and seems to make the kp worse. It's a lose-lose situation either way and it's embarrassing. I saw a dermatologist about my condition because I knew what was going on with my skin and asked if there was any new topical treatments or anything that he could prescribe for it. He recommended I use my son's sterroid ointment for the first two weeks to reduce the bumps and then use an alpha hydroxy type of moisturizer to keep the bumps minimized. The sterroid ointment (triamcynalone) helped the bumps slightly but not the redness. Sterroids are not typically recommended to be used for extended lengths of time because they can damage the skin greatly. I am so desperate to find any solution to this skin problem that I will try ANYTHING. I'm going to try the oil pulling, but will also use the extra virgin coconut oil in the shower just to speed things up. Whatever it takes! |
