Smile So What Works?

Hey everyone,
Belinda here. Ive recently found out I have KP.....well Ive known for quite a while I have SOMETHING but Ive only recently found out what that something is. So Ive started trying to find out whatever I can about KP and how to control it. I would really appreciate people sharing what has worked, and what hasnt worked for them. My legs are the main area I am affected, but also my upper arms. Something that I have tried, and it does work (all be it short term) is stockings. The bumps on my legs go away and leaves my skin very smooth. It is uncomfortable to wear them for a long time though, and it only lasts until you dont have the stockings on and my skin gets irritated by clothing or bedding or whatever. So please, share you tips and hints and also what you have tried that didnt work. I hope to make some friends here and stay in touch.
Thanks! Bella.

What has worked for me is Arbonne. It's called the NutriMinC Body system. It's a body wash, serum, and lotion that has completely cleared up my KP! Check out my thread "Clearing up with Arbonne" for details on it. The only bad thing, of course, is that it doesn't "cure" it. If I stop using it regularly, the bumps come right back! Email me if you have any ?'s : allisonsullivan@insightbb.com
Oh, BTW, welcome to our forum!

What is working with me is extra virgin coconut oil and cetaphil . I put each of them on once a day but not at the same time. If I put on EVCO in the morning then I put cetaphil on at night, or vice versa. I also lighty exfoliate with a salt scrub called Aromafloria real spa, with spearmint, eucalptus, and mandarin essential oils a couple times a week. I like these three products because they do not contain petro products or parabens and the scrub and EVCO are all natural.

I finally figured out that fragrances really irritate my kp.

Since I have been combining these three things my reddness has decreased by 70%-ish and the bumps by 80%-ish.

What has worked for me is AHA cream, Neostrata 15% glycolic cream, the sun, vitamins, drinking lots of water... and not picking !

Best of luck to you,

I've seen some people talk about sulfur soap. I can't find the thread on it. Has anyone tried it before? If so, how did it work out? Thanks!

I use the sulpher soap with salcylic acid a couple of times a week. If I skipa week or two, I notice my KP gets worse. I can't remember the website, I bought 12 bars initially and they've lasted forever!

Evco and Burts Bees Almond Milk Hand Creme

I'm using extra virgin coconut oil in the shower. sometimes I just rub it on and then lightly rinse and sometimes I loofah it on. I've also found that Burt's Bees Almond Milk Hand Creme works as a GREAT moisturizer during the day. It comes in a jar and is only about $7. I use it 2-3 times a day. My skin feels very smooth after applying it. I just started this regimine and although my KP is not completely gone, it is more tolerable. I'm trying to use only natural products. I have KP on my upper and lower arms, right hip and stomach.

What brand of extra virgin coconut oil are you using? I've only seen regular coconut oil at my local pharmacy.

The brand of extra virgin coconut oil I have is Garden of Life. I got it from Wild oats which is kinda like Whole Foods. It's liquid when it's over 76 degrees so I put it in a shampoo bottle. It's staying semi-solid now and the shampoo bottle works well.

I'll tell you what doesn't work for KP : ACCUTANE.

Listen, this is a great remedy for your face acne, but I believe after you're done with the treatment, KP gets so much worse.

And some doctors are even prescribing it for KP... the nerve!

Ok, so I went to Whole Foods Market today and bought some extra virgin coconut oil. Now I'm not sure how to use this stuff. Do I use it when I'm taking a shower or do I apply it after the shower and use it as a lotion? The brand that I got is Kopali Organics. Has anyone heard of it or used it? Here's the link to their website site http://kopaliorganics.com/node/35 just in case anyone is curious.

There's a thread about it, but I'm pretty sure you scoop a little out (a little goes a long way) and rub it into the affected areas while you're showering. Then rinse lightly and pat dry (don't rub!). Also, if you keep it outside your shower curtain, it'll remain solid, but if you keep it in the shower, it'll be liquid and messy. I haven't heard of that particular brand of Coconut oil, but as long as it's E.V., you should be fine.

What works for me

First, thanks for everyone for sharing their experiences and suggestions.

As an adolescent, I was embarrassed by what I now know is keratosis pilaris on my upper arms. The condition disappeared on its own every a couple of years. Now, nearly a half century later (!), it reoccurred. I am not aware of anyone in my family having a similar condition, nor of anything that may have precipitated its reoccurrence.

After reading some reports that exfoliation and products with urea might be helpful, I decided to try what I had on hand. I had been using a synthetic exfoliating towel and Peter Thomas Roth Botanical Buffing Beads on my face in the shower and simply added my upper arms to this daily regimen. (I use Earth Therapeutics Exfoliating Hydro Towel from the drugstore, but any rough-surfaced synthetic should do. In my experience, cotton washcloths and hemp scrubs are difficult to keep absolutely clean.) After showering, I use Lamisilk Hydrate (which lists urea as its second ingredient after water) to moisture my feet and began applying this to my upper arms as well.

I saw improvement in about a week. Now, a month later, there are no visible bumps and only the slightest bumps discernible to my fingertips. I am confident that these also will disappear completely in a month or two.

Hope this is helpful to someone else.
