Re: The diet that is treating my KP!
Here's my 2 cents.... I have had keratosis pilaris since childhood on my upper arms and thighs. It is not a mild case either, especially on my upper arms which are always red and crusty due to my scratching, trying to get rid of the bumps I hate, which only makes matters worse. You name the product, I tried it to the get rid of the unsightful curse but nothing ever worked.
Then, just recently, I discovered the cure for keratosis pilaris quite by accident. A couple of years ago I started feeling discomfort in my knee joints and with time, it progressed to stiffness and other problems. To make a long story short, in the last few months I started taking a natural product to remedy arthritis. Apart from the main ingredients, which aid in the repair of cartilage, Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are included in the mix for their anti-inflammatory properties. Well, the concoction was getting expensive and I was looking for an alternative product to control the inflammation, which contained these beneficial essential oils, so after doing some research, I found out that nuts and some oils contain plenty of these. So, I went to the grocery store and bought a bag of unsalted, roasted sunflower seeds for the Omega 6 (I know, raw would be better but my taste buds have demands) and a bottle of this product called Esencial Plus, which is a mix of extra virgin olive oil and fish oil (tastes great and only about $8 for a whole 25.5 Fl. Oz.- I could have bought walnuts but they're expensive) and I proceeded with the experiment snacking on a fistful of sunflower seeds in the evening and taking a tablespoon of the oil straight before bedtime just to see if this would make a difference in my comfort level of my joints. Well, as an unexpected side effect, just 3 days later, I noticed that my upper arms seemed smoother. I was skeptical and waited to make a conclusion, but now it has been 7 days and my left arm has almost completely cleared of all the bumps. My right arm, which had been under attack from a scratching frenzy before I started the experiment is getting much better as well. So, to confirm what I suspected, I did some more research and it appears that I stumbled on something that really works because among other things, Omega 3 fatty acids actually aid in the absorption of vitamin A, which is the skin vitamin and as a result, I am experiencing this transformation of my skin. Mind you, that I have not done anything different. I am eating the same foods and have not had to give anything up (as if I could ever give up pizza and dairy). And yet, it is only 7 days later and I have the smoothest skin I've ever had in my life. No redness, old bumps falling off and no new ones forming. This stuff works, I am not sure whether the combination of the two or just one of the essential oils is making a difference, which will require more experimenting, but I'm happy with the results and I need both anyway. And as for my knees, they could be better, but that's another story. |

Good to hear, man, thanks for sharing. I have been taking fish oil supplements but will also try eating sunflower seeds daily as well.

Re: The diet that is treating my KP!
Hi Goodluck!
I'm really interested in doing the diet you suggested.... Since I'm having quite a severe KP, especially on my thighs and calves. Since I've started to drink a lot of water, I see that the KP on my arms are getting better. But not on the legs ![]() So, I'm pretty curious about the flour diet you suggested. Since I'm living in Asia, it's pretty hard to get food that are flour free... If you don't mind, may I know what ingredients in flour we should avoid? Is it the gluten? Thanks a lot Goodluck! |

I think that's more fun! No need to give up the "good" food.... I think I'm going to try this one first... Since I'm also having trouble with my knees. But Rascal, where did you buy the Esencial Plus? Can I get it online? FYI I live in Asia... Thanks!! |

Re: The diet that is treating my KP!
LOF,
It most likely is the gluten in wheat flour products. A healthy diet in Asia or anywhere is to concentrate on protein, such as fish and lean meat, and lots of vegetables. If you use a search engine, such as Google, you can read which grains are gluten-free. kebod |

Re: The diet that is treating my KP!
HI,
has anyone considered Flax Seeds, or Flax seed oil. I read the it has the highest potency of omega 3 than any plant and does amazing things for the skin. I bought ground flax and have stored it in my fridge and mix it with my yogurt or anything else that I eat. I heard you have to grind them fresh or they go rancid, but I havent noticed any difference in them since I bought them 3 weeks ago. But I also havent noticed any difference in my bumpy skin. |

Re: The diet that is treating my KP!
Cielo,
Because flax seed oil becomes rancid so quickly, it should not be used. The better way is to grind 2 tablespoons of flaxseeds in a coffee grinder daily and mix it with yogurt, cereal or a smoothie. Don't cook it, as heat destroys omega 3. If you are eating the seeds whole, they are passing through you whole and you are not benefiting from omega 3. Other sources of omega 3: fresh salmon, canned wild salmon or canned sardines twice a week, or 1/4 cup of walnuts daily. Most canned salmon is wild, and higher in omega 3. Much of the fresh salmon we see in the grocery stores is farm-raised, and not as high in omega 3. kebod |

Re: The diet that is treating my KP!
Thanks Kebod.
I bought them already ground in a bag from a health food store. I have stored it in the fridge and it hasnt changed. Maybe it is some other form of flax seed. I store it in a tupperware in the freezer now. I havent noticed that it is rancid. How would I know?? It looks fine to me. |

Re: The diet that is treating my KP!
Cielo,
I hope it was already refrigerated when you bought it. My friend, who is a naturopathic physician, says that flaxseeds should not be purchased ground because of the rancidity problem. If the seeds are rancid, they will have a bitter flavor. Freshly ground seeds don't have this bitterness. kebod Last edited by kebod; 09-30-2008 at 05:23 PM. Reason: spelling correction |

Re: The diet that is treating my KP!
Dear Kebod,
Thanks for the reply... Alright then, I've been trying Rascal's omega 3 and 6 intakes for about 3 days and I've seen a little change on my skin. The bumps near my right knee is starting to be disappeared! But I'll try Goodluck's gluten diet as well... A couple of days ago I saw Omega 3 product at GNC. They have the salmon only and mixture of salmon, tuna, and something else which I don't remember. It contains 1000mg of omega 3. Is it safe to take and which one is better? The pure salmon one or the combination of the 3 fish? FYI, both are containing 1000mg of omega 3. And for the omega 6, I'm taking avocado juice and Bragg extra virgin olive oil... Since I can't find Rascal's Esencial oil here. So everyday I'm taking 4 tablespoon of olive oil. Is that alright? Thanks, LOF |

Re: The diet that is treating my KP!
I'm pretty sure you don't need to supplement with omega 6. Our diet is very rich in omega 6 already, which is not so good. The goal is to increase omega 3 intake so the ratio of omega 3 to 6 is somewhere around 1:1

Gluten-free product & recipe sources
I am finding plenty of info on going gluten free (No Wheat Flour, or Rye) just by googling "gluten free bread recipe" or gluten-free recipes" or "gluten-free mall", etc. Info Including the fact that Oats are technically gluten free BUT you must find Oats that have NOT been processed on the same equipment as wheat or rye. There's at least one brand of those that I've run into at the gluten free mall but I haven't purchased yet. I probably will, I really like oats. I purchased some buckwheat flour recently that is gluten free, arrowhead mills. It's fine, and as long as it's not process on the same machinery, it is a different kind of plant with no gluten and not really a "wheat" even though wheat's in its name. there are many other flour type substitutes. I'm just starting to get into gluten free baking a little as I had mostly cut all carbs for several months but I yearned for someway to make some crepes (buckwheat!) and make some gifts for celiac friends:
glutenfreemall.com - gluten-free foods for your celiac disease diet Recipes | Gluten Free Recipes Gluten-Free Recipes Karina-s Kitchen- Recipes from a Gluten-Free Goddess I don't personally worry about being dairy free anymore but a person may have considerations for dairy as it is a common allergen just like wheat, soy, fish and eggs. I did try going dairy free and using soy instead but I've found my sinuses (my allergy barometer) are better WITH dairy and WITHOUT soy! I do not feel that i have a problem with lactose or casein but then again, I mostly use either cream in my tea now or cheese as my dairy. The enzyme action that makes aged cheeses breaks down much of the lactose in milk. So worth a try to eliminate but I recommend dairy if you can tolerate it as it's such a good source of calcium and Vitamins A & D... If you try anti-candida dieting, there are limits or it is banned depending on the particulars. Cheese - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - bd |
