Calcium- good or bad?
I've had KP on my upper arms my whole life, and I'm in my mid-20s now. Nobody in my family seems to have it, except I remember an aunt saying she had it as a child but outgrew it. I still have mine, and it doesnt seem to be going away. I used to have it on my face and thighs as a child, but all of that has long disappeared. The KP on my arms hasn't improved with age at all. Everyone in my family, except me, seems to have flawless smooth skin. I've just discovered the forum, and have decided to try changing my diet to see if it can help make my KP finally go away, as people seemed to have great results from eating smarter.
I've read on some posts that KP is caused by calcium deficiency, and that taking calcium supplements will help clear it up. Then I read on other posts that the calcium in our bodies is part of the problem, and we should cut down on calcium to improve our KP (avoiding dairy, etc.). I'm a little confused- is calcium part of the problem or the solution for KP? If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd really appreciate it! |

I never heard that too much calcium is part of the problem. Dairy seems to be for some people - for me it doesn`t seem to matter. According to my experience it`s the balance that counts: much vegetable & fruit, mineral water & tea, less dairy, wheat, meat, and sugar.
There`s a brilliant post by Rachel18 about what vitamins we need. So far, pills haven`t made a difference for me - but eating food which contains the required vitamins makes a difference (Vit A, E, B, Zinc, essential fatty acids, so I eat a lot of yellow fruits and vegetables, spinach, tomatoes, olive oil, salmon) It works very well for me...but the more time I spend on this forum the more I realize is that everybody seems to react differently both to food and external treatments. |

meena74 when i said that cutting out dairy could be beneficial for your kp it does not mean cut out calcium. Calcium and dairy are two different things and i know a lot of people will think of dairy as the main source of calcium but it is the lactose in dairy that causes the problem not calcium. Calcium is a very important mineral for healthy bones and should not be eliminated by all means from your diet, other sources of calcium include almonds, brazil nuts, carrot, green leafy veges, salmon etc

calcium fortified soya milk is a good alternative to cow's milk. And it tastes great! (I like it better than cows milk).

Rachel 18,
I have read alot of your posts. You seem to have a great deal of knowledge on this subject. Has your diet cured or at least lessened your KP. I started an Omega 3-6-9 regiment to attempt to cure an EFA deficiency, which the doctor says is my root problem for my KP and other issues. |
