I've just discovered I have KP.........

I have put up with my disgusting arms and legs for the last ten years and it was only until this friday just gone that I decided to do a google search to try and find out what my skin condition could be. I dont know about everyone else but I'm sick of people starring at my arms and making hurtful comments (why are people so ignorant?), so after a week of sunshine (and hence having to wear short sleeves to work) and therefore a week of comments and disgusted stares I found out that I have KP and I discovered this site, and I cant tell you how happy I am to have found people like me. So I thought I'd write a little message to say hello to you all and to ask for any advice and tips on what might help me in the battle against my KP....

I've been reading loads of your posts and have already been to the health shop to stock up on vitamins and am investing in some salicylic/Glycolic Acid products from perfectskin.uk.com as the stuff you find in the shops is a very low percentage and this site offers much higher percentages and at low prices....has anyone in the UK tried this site????

Would appreciate any feedback

Thanks

Hi Sophy, I don't live too far from you at all (but I'm moving on sunday up north) anyways, I got a detox brush from boots at cribbs and I use it once or twice a day, makes the skin look soooo much better after a while.

Actually, it's made such a difference that I don't feel the need to try any other form of treatment. I just do that and use a standard moisturiser (I use a clarins body one).

Hi there I too found out from searching on the net about a month ago that I have kp and that I am not the only person out there with this skin condition. Infact 50% of the world share this horrible thing called kp. Its all trail and error everyone is different so things work differently on different people. My problem is not with bumby skin because exfoliating takes care of that its the red dots that really get to me. I have heard that there are creams that help fade them and I have some that I am yet to use because you have to avoid sunlight and I am in the sun alot and use tanning beds as it helps my skin.
Keep up with the vitamins though because there is alot of research that suggest people with kp lack vitamin A and D. Good luck in finding somthing that works for you!

Atcgirl what is a detox brush?

Hey Sophy,

The same thing happened to me yesterday! I really can't believe that I am not alone in this any more and it actually has a name. I have KP all over my arms and from my thighs to my ankles and it has bothered me so much throughout my life. I have been to the doctors with it several times and I have never been properly diagnoised.

I absolutly hate the fact that I am a twenty two year old fun loving student that has to put up with stupid comments and hours in the shops trying to find something that I feel, even remotely, comfortable in. I'm lucky enough to have an amazing partner who makes me feel like the most beautiful person in the world so it doesn't bother me as much as it did when I was in High School.

I use diprobase on a daily basis which is an amazing vat of moisteriser that I got from my GP. It doesn't clear up KP but it really helps soften my skin and get rid of any dryness which I know is a problem with us KP sufferers in the windy cold UK. Also those exfoliating gloves that you can get from the Body Shop also really help.

Has anyone tried Elicina Cream which has popped up on my google search, it sounds too good to be true!? Any feedback welcome!

I found out a few weeks ago what these wretched bumps on my legs are. I was the dermatologist for a follow up to something else and happened to remember to ask him. He told me it was KP, there is no cure, only treatments. He told me to use a good lotion twice a day, avoid drying soaps, use something like Dove that has some moisturizer in it and avoid things that excessively dry the skin. He also told me to try using a pumice stone on my legs every day for a while to see if that would help. I'm interested in hearing from other people with this problem. For the longest time, I just thought it was "shaving bumps" until my dermatologist pointed out that I had it on the back of my arms too

I have always called it my aligator skin, I just found out yesterday while reading on the treadmill at the gym. I came across an artical in a magazine regarding keratosis pilaris. I now no I have KP. The funniest thing is this weekend I happend to purchase a product from a beauty supply. It was a scrub made from hot stones. It's called Spa Energy Hot Stone Sirculation Scrub. I purchased it from a store called ULTA here in California. You could probably get it at ULTA.COM I really don't know why I used it on my arms but I did and it's like night and day. I could not believe the difference in my skin. I even came in on Monday to work and showed all the girls I work with and they were really surprised. I have used it twice and my skin is so soft, you can hardly see the bumps, only from up close. I know how you feel about how people stare and ask what is wrong with your arm? Are you cold? Maybe that's why I came up with the aligator skin just to shut people up. Anyway... saw your post and thought I would share my new found secret. You have to just scrup the hell out of your arms when you use it but what a difference!

Hi there,

I've ordered some of that Elicina Cream but it hasn't arrived yet. In the meantime I've been using Garnier Pure overnight gel which has salicyclic acid. I've only been using it since Friday and I've seen a difference already, my skin is less bumpy and the redness has gone down a little, the problem with salicylic acid creams sold in shops is that they are really low % (like 2%) so I found a website called www.perfectskin.uk.com which sells cream, gels and peels etc which are higher % like those used in beauty salons but are really cheap, the one I want to get isnt in stock at the momment but when I do try them I'll post a new thread.

my doctor told me it was ache and to use benzoyl peroxide which not only is really annoying as it belaches your clothes but just dries out your skin and makes the bumps even more red and ugly!!! Salicylic Acid and exfoliating is the way forward for me!

I've deicided that the next time someone makes a horrible comment or looks at my arms with disgust I'm not going to get embarrassed but I'm going to stand up for myself and say that it's a very common genetic problem with no cure and see what happens...

Thanks for your reply, maybe I'll try it...

That sounds exactly like what I have --- I thought it was a type of razor burn on my upper legs and quit shaving up there... only it never went away. I did not notice I had the same thing on the backs of my arms until my dermatologist pointed it out to me! I have been using a moisturizing shaving gel when I shave, then I use a pumice stone on my legs and arms and as soon as I get out of the shower I put Eucerin Cream (well, walmart brand lol) on my legs and arms and you would be shocked at how noticeble the bumps are not! ! Good luck to you!

I'm so happy to have found this forum! I have had KP on my arms and legs since my early teens (well, that's when I remember first noticing it) and red cheeks since birth and have put up with years of stares and hurtful comments, thinking I just had 'bad skin' and was unlucky, as I don't know anyone else with skin like mine. I've now noticed that my 18 month old son has slightly bumpy skin on the back of his upper arms, although not red, so I'm praying he doesn't develop it too.

I have tried all kinds of creams in the past and even took a high dosage of vitamin A for 3 months, all to no avail. I've found the only thing that helps my skin look clearer is some sun exposure, as it always looks much better in the summer and when I've been on holiday.

Why are some doctors so inept at diagnosing this condition when it is so common? Two GPs told me it was rosecea on my face and a dermatologist originally said I had folliculitis on my arms and legs, but when I researched it on the internet I knew it wasn't.

Anyway, I now use Eucerin Extremely Dry Skin Treatment Lotion with 10% Urea on my arms and legs, which has made my skin feel much softer but doesn't do anything for the actual appearance of the KP. I have given up all hope of anything working on the facial redness and use a good foundation instead.
Has anyone tried Elicina (sp) cream yet?

It's in the section with all the shower caps, flannels, sponges etc. Go into boots from the top end where clinique etc are, walk down the middle towards the exit to the car park and it's one of the last isles on the left. If you can't find this particular brush, I'm sure a body brush from somewhere would do the same job.

I find that this http://www.clinique.co.uk/templates/...T_ID=PROD60161 covers it up to a certain extent, it's got spot fighting ingredients in it, but doesn't seem to have made mine worse. You never know there might be something in it which will make it better over time.

I've attached pictures of my kp with and without this stuff.
