Question Question for Darker-Skinned Members

Has anyone suffered from the KP bumpy patches turning into white patches. My daughter has KP and now that we have the bumpy patches under control, her brown skin is now scarred with white spots. Her dermatologist has prescribed a medicine that is used in vitiligo (sp?), although it is a much smaller dosage. She must also stand in a UV light chamber for a few minutes every three weeks. I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this and has gotten their original skin tone back. Please let me know. My daughter is just reaching puberty (13), the summer is coming in, and she does not want to wear short-sleeved shirts or shorts. Her KP is all over her arms and legs.

No, I am very dark skinned, and I have never experirneced this. It may be due to all of the different types of medication that you are putting on your daughter. I have black/brown spots over every inch of my legs and a litttle on my arms. I have not been successful at getting these to go away.

I don't think that it is the medicine. I think that it is scarring from the KP. Another person replied to me that KP can cause hyperpigmentation (darkening) or hypopigmentation (lightening) in the areas. The lighter skin was always there. It is just that now it is much more noticeable because her skin is smooth instead of bumpy. We had to work on the KP first and then the pigmentation. The dermatologist is confident that her color will come back eventually in those areas. We will just have to be diligent with the medication and UV Ray treatments. This KP condition is a monster! I've told my daughter that she may have this condition for years, and only through constant work will we get it under control. I must admit that her condition in the last 3 weeks has improved 95%. She only has about 3-4 bumpy areas left. Everywhere else is completely smooth. We are hoping that in a few months, her color will begin to return in those spots.

But you said white patches, right? I understand the dark spots, but I have never experienced the white spots. Has anyone else? The dark spots are inflammation/hyperpigmentation of the KP bump jarred under the skin.

I am a Fashion Designer living in Egypt. One of my customers had this. I asked her to apply strong coffee as a lotion to her legs. She tanned evenly and beautifly.

Another sure way to go, but not for kids, is to go lighter using the milk/peroxide mask I mentioned somewhere else. It is instant bleach that will casue the dark skin to blend with the white spots. It is painful for young children.
