Wrinkled Hands

I have really winkled hands and I am only 15 years old. Seriously, worst than my own grandmother's. I was just wondering does KP affect your hands as well. Does the kp make my hands all wrinkle? I've been using Neutrogena "New Hands" lotion cream for about 3-4 weeks and my hands still look the same. I hate it when people say "Eww..your hands all wrinkly, use some lotion." People just don't understand it's not that easy for me and I don't bother to tell them. Can you guys recommend any products that will reduce the wrinkles on my hands?

BumpBump,

In addition to the skin being very wrinkled, are the lines on your palms also very pronounced? I think I read something about this a while back on the internet....can't remember where. If you can post a pic of your hands, I will tell you if its like what I read about. Then I'll try to find the article again for you.

bumpbump! you are but a wee one! I am quite a bit older at 32 ... I have always had fairly wrinkly hands and you know, there are so many others things for you to think about- think about all the fabulous things you have going on...hands and hands and e/t some stupid people might comment from time to time...you just have to learn to be yourself and accept them...There is not much you can do to change the character of your hands...some are more wrinkly than others...My hands have never been pretty girly hands...but I make sure to get nice manicures...have you tried that? Cheer up...Things could be worse Maybe get some alpha hydroxy lotion if it makes you feel better

bumpbump,

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. I wish I did, as I've been searching for one myself. I'm a 29 year old female who suffers from the same problem. Kids in school were always asking my why my hands looked so old. Sometimes I told them that I was cold and sometimes I didn't say anything. I hated to show my hands. In fact, I still do. I can't stand them.

Manicures don't help me, as I don't want anything drawing unwanted attention to my hands. That and my cuticles are a complete mess. I've always wanted normal, girly hands and fingers. I'm not sure there is anything out there to change them.

I don't want to be a downer, but I just want to be honest in saying that it's never gotten better for me. I've tried every lotion imaginable for dry hands. Nothing works. Granted, it will take away the dry part for awhile, but the wrinkles remain. I struggle with it every single day and I have yet to learn to be ok with it.

I also have many wrinkles on my hands, especially the fingers. And there are very light red dots (like the ones on my legs) where the hair on the fingers is growing.

I think those old-looking hands are a side effect of KP.

But compared to my really ugly skin condition on the rest of my entire body, I don´t care so much about it.

I guess we just have to deal with that!

Re: Wrinkled Hands

Hyperkeratosis can cause a lot of build up on hands and feet too. I had a friend whose looked more wrinkly and thick than scaly when it would flare up during times of stress. Most of the photos I've seen on the web look more like the scaly kind though...

Re: Wrinkled Hands

I would recommend trying Gold Bond Intense moisturizing lotion. As a nail tech, I know what it means to have dry hands. This lotion works better than a lot I've tried. It's extremely thick too.

Make sure you are reapplying lotion as often as your hands need it. Just because you apply lotion once, doesn't mean it will be enough...if that's how you do it. My hands can look great after a lotion application, but if I take a shower or wash the dishes without gloves, forget it. I've just stripped my hands of the moisture they had because of the detergents in the soap. It's a battle, but you can win it. Also drinking a ton of water is essential to having moisturized skin from the inside out. Pinch the skin on the topside of your hand and lift up. Now let go...what does the skin do? If it slides back slowly, it's dry. Moisture in skin allows the skin to have elasticity. With elasticity, skin will "pop" back into place when you release it.

As far as cuticles go, you can try a product called Nailactin from Mavala. It's really nice, but you need to do it twice a day. Cuticle oil also helps. I keep some in my car. That way I can utilize my time at a red light. Try to use high quality oils, like the one from Creative called Solar Oil. It smells really nice and doesn't contain mineral oil. Natural oils tend to work better on the skin than mineral oil. Coconut oil being the best since it can actually penetrate the skin.

Overnight moisture treatments on your hands is also good. Applying a heavy moisturizer to your hands before bed is good because for 6-8 hours your hands are out of water and the like. Plus your body is regenerating then too. Hope that helps!

Re: Wrinkled Hands

I'll try the Gold Bond, I've been recently using Vaseline Intensive Healing Cream, and it has not helped the wrinkles to go away at all. It has made the back of my hands soft, but wrinkles are still visible.

Re: Wrinkled Hands

everytime i log on, i discover something new and make new connections.

my hands and feet have always been wrinkled and dry with skin that looks like crepe paper.
i've always hated it, but i had no idea this could be related to my kp.

thanks for all the advice!

Re: Wrinkled Hands

Some of you may want to try oil pulling. It helps very much with dry skin and facial wrinkles, so perhaps it could help with hand wrinkles. If you are interested, go to "Cured at Last with Oil Pulling.
