What Worked For Me

While looking for a good emollient for my eczema, I discovered by accident that Cetaphil lotion, applied right after my shower in two thin applications and rubbed in well, made 98% of the keratosis pilaris on my upper arms disappear in a few weeks. I'd had it for over 30 years and tried a bunch of things over the years, none of which worked. So I figured I'd always have it but now I don't! One day I just noticed that it was gone. Around the same time I also started taking two 1200 mg NatureMade Omega-3 Fish Oil capsules a day so maybe that helped too.

I believe the Cetaphil contains lipids that allowed my skin to heal itself. If Cetaphil doesn't work for you, I'd try others like Eucerin and Triceram, but keep trying until you find one that gives your skin what it's missing.

Hope this helps someone.

No redness... my skin looks and feels normal!

I started taking moisturizers seriously after reading Eczema-Free For Life, by Dr. Adnan Nasir who teaches dermatology at Duke University. He explained that eczema is the result of the abnormal development of some 20 genes which cause the skin's barrier function to fail. Apparently KP is also helped by improving that barrier function.

I had been using a moisturizer that wasn't working -- I didn't think any could actually help prevent flare-ups. But after reading the book I decided to try something thicker like Cetaphil and apply it as Nasir recommends. Bottom line is that I was going through a large tube of Elidel AND floucinonide every month. But since using the Cetaphil, haven't needed either of them at all. Not to mention that my KP has cleared up too. That was an unanticipated surprise!

The only bad part is that I have a stockpile of Elidel and floucinonide that I've paid for and no longer need. But that's a downside I'm very happy about!

So you're using the Cetaphil Lotion, fragrance free? I also noticed they carry a Cetaphil cream, fragrance free as well.

Yes, the lotion -- exactly the same as pictured in the link above. Haven't tried the cream.

I got my results from the lotion. Haven't tried the cream. It may work better or worse, don't know.

I had some redness, yes. I had KP on my upper arms only and in general the higher up, the redder. My right arm is completely clear now. My left arm has only a little KP in a place where I think I was missing with the Cetaphil. BTW... when I shower I wash my upper arms with a washcloth and Dove hypo-allergenic soap for sensitive skin. I'm also taking two 1200 mg omega-3 fish oil capsules a day as I mentioned in another post.

No, Eucerin doesn't work for you. And BTW, I'm saying that Cetaphil works for me. But that doesn't mean that Cetaphil will work for you or that Eucerin won't work for me. I had KP on my upper arms for 30 years and discovered by accident that the Cetaphil I was using for my eczema made it disappear. Eczema is caused by roughly 20 genes that are defective to varying degrees. I don't know about KP but just as eczema is different in different people, so is KP so that means that different things will work (or not), depending on the person. But I'm certain that there are some people here who Cetaphil will work for, which is why I'm posting. That's the only reason I joined this site to begin with.
