Need someone more experienced with this

Hi. My daughter just got diagnosed with Keratosis Pilaris. By the time she and her dad left the dermatologist, my husband had purchased 1 sunscreen, 1 cleanser and 1 lotion...totallying $140. The dermatologist wants us to come back to purchase a mineral makeup line.

Are there easier ways to get good results and not lose house and home? hee hee

Well, unfortunately not many things work well for most sufferers. Maybe self tanning lotion to kinda cover things up or really tanning helps a lot of people, but is bad for your skin. I have been making my own salicylic acid formulations lately and it has been helping a lot. I buy the ingredients, propylene glycol and salicylic acid from:
http://www.thepersonalformulator.com

and make my own salicylic acid solutions. You can save a lot of money and see good results that way. It's still acid though and most people seem to have luck with 6% SA which is what is in Keralyt gel, which is what some people use. I have been using 15 and 30 percent lately to speed up results. I plan on going to just 6 % soon daily and see what the results are. A lot of people say good things about Keralyt which like I said equals 6 % SA (It's little more than propylene glycol and 6 percent SA which you can make yourself cheap).

You can get salicylic acid poisoning if you aren't careful though. I don't think that is possible with 6 percent formula once a day though. If the skin is olive or darker, then it will cause hyperpigmentation.

Good luck. I know that stuff that derms usually prescribe can be expensive and usually don't work. A lot of them probably are trying to make more money off you by selling expensive stuff that doesn't really work IMO.

My doctor prescribed 12% AmLactin Cream. (not a dermatologist) I have been using it for 3 weeks and mine is almost gone. Also, I think to help the cream to work, you need to scrub it hard with a rough loofah or rope cloth. I have been scrubbing in the shower everymorning and then using the cream 2X a day. I put it on after the shower and going to sleep. Other moisturizers might work, but this worked great for me. It is not that expensive to get at Walmart or Costco... I have also used pure coconut oil from the Health food store and it works great too. Perhaps you should buy your things somewhere else besides the dermatologist. He probably makes something off of everything he is selling. I heard that sulphur soap works too but have never tried it.

I had the same thing when I went the the derm. It's like a five minute consulatation and then they ship you off for a skin consulation with some sales person. My derm told me not to loofah but once a week.. that's what I used to do and my skin looked awful. I know do it every day and my skin looks a little better. I'll post pics if my skin clears with my new regime. I think the big problem is that a lot of these Dermatologits are becomiing like salons. Come to me and I'll sell you a whole load of overpriced stuff you don't need before we even try one treatment or give you one test. Really Really ****es me off.

Yes. One of the reasons I hate derms and some other types of doctors.

Never had much luck with AmLactin myself. That was the first thing I ever tried when KP appeared on my legs. Usually derms will start with that for KP. I bet you could get better results cheaper with a homemade 12 percent Salicylic Acid solution. Seems like SA is superior to any alpha hydroxy acid like AMLactin for KP, judging from my experience and the experience of the people on this forum.
