Sun helps but how? Any idea?
As some people in this forum stated, sun (or tanning) really helps. While doing my military service last year, I had to wear sleeveless shirts -normally i never do
-. I recognized great improvement. My Kp almost cleared up, although i did not use any moisturizing creams. Now, i wonder how sun helped. I am not sure, probably a stupid thing to say, but is it possible that there is a relationship between KP and vitamin D? (Correct me if i am wrong, but as far as i know for our body to produce vitamin D, we need sun light.) |

The sun has always helped with my KP too. In high school and early college, I regularly tanned since it was the only thing that helped. However, I'm naturally fair complected, and decided it was not worth it to prune my skin for these damn bumps. My guess is that a tan helps speed the turnover of skin cells - kind of like exfoliating. Summertime humidity also helps a lot. Recently, I resumed tanning for only a few minutes a week in preparation for a wedding I was in. Again - marked difference in my KP. I was tempted not to stop, but the idea of skin cancer is not an attractive one.

Were you using any sun block or sun screen? The ingredients of that one product that some people have tried is sun screen. Vitamin D is fat soluable and you can get it in foods. It is added to most milk. My understanding is that the only vitamins that aren't transported easily from the blood through to the skin is Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Vitamin E has even been found to work better orally.
So then you might look at the radiation exposure from the sun as causing changes in the skin. Since Keratosis is made in the epidermis and the sun's radiation penetrates through out the epidermis, you have to wonder. |

That's an interesting idea. This past summer my skin improved the day after being in the sun, which of course could not have been improvement due to peeling. I have a book called Prescription for Nutritional Healing, and it says that the Vitamin D that we get from food or supplements is not fully active. It requires conversion by the liver, and then by the kidneys, before it becomes fully active. People with liver or kidney disorders have a hard time converting Vit D. But when the skin is exposed to the sun's ultraviolet rays, a precursor of vitamin D is formed. It has something to do with the utilization of calcium and phosphorus, and calcium helps to keep the skin healthy.
Have you looked into this any further? Have you tried any supplemental forms of vitamin D? |
