Is skin irritation to metals related to KP ?

I am suffering from KP for over 9 years now. I have KP on my back, upper arms, buttocks, thighs and it’s spreading on my lower arms, chest and stomach.

I know that there isn't a cure (yet) for KP but I am having another problem that I fear is related to KP.

I get a kind of itchy rash on my skin if I wear any accessories. It reacts to any metal within a week. Because of this, I cannot wear a wrist watch nor waist belt with a metal buckle. Is this related to KP ? Has anyone else got the same problem ? I have consultant many dermatologists and haven’t got any medicine that works.

I am a new member to this community and I cannot explain how relieved I am to know that this problem is not a malignant skin disease. I’ve been reading lots of postings and been trying out different things. Please help me out on this.

Thank you all !

I don't think they're related, but people with KP probably are more likely to have allergies etc.? I can't wear cheap jewelery ( i think it is pewter I am allergic too). It gives me a itchy rash also! And I have to be careful with products I use on my face. Cheap facial moisturizers make my skin red and irritated! Anyone else have the same problem?

My skin is easily irritated too, by cheap jewelry and by novelty lotions etc that have fragrances (like you get in gift baskets or at hotels). I've always had very sensitive skin all over, not just in the places I have kp. When I was little I was allergic to almost every single kind of soap!! No fun.

It has gotten much better with age (I am 20 now), but I still have to be careful.

I'm allergic to cheap earrings, they have to be real gold or silver... but i've never noticed any other reactions to other types of jewellery. I've worn pewter rings before and I have no problems. As for the lotions, yes I notice that the ones with fragrance seem to be the ones that don't really work although I'm not sure that they actually irritate the skin.

yea i can only wear gold and never use cheap moisturisers.. by cheap i mean mainstream. I do get like natural ones and pharmacitcal ones that arent necessarily that expensive but dont contain certain things that the mainstream ones have. Who can use those and still have nice skin? I dont know!

You guys are allergic to nickel. I believe it's actually aggravated by sweat. I used to wear a lot jewelry when I would go out to clubs and bars, and I started getting rashes on my neck where the tips of my earings would hit and on my wrist where my bracelet would touch. I went to the derm and found out I was allergic to nickel. It's actually pretty common. You just have to find jewelry that says nickel free or for sensitive skin. Even sterling silver and real gold has some nickel in it, it just might not be as much. You can also try painting clear nail polish over any jewerly you have that has nickel. Hope that helps!

This makes good sense. In deed the accessories that my skin doesn’t like are nickel coated. And you are absolutely right that it gets provoked by sweat.

I’ll try the clear nail polish trick.

Thanks for sharing, its good to know that it’s a common thing.
