Swimming and sun

My son, 3yrs and now daughter 11 months have KP on their faces. When my son first started showing his KP we went to two separate Dermatologists highly recommended in our area. The first diagnosed stuff that only made it worse. We took him to a child Derm who recommended we don't use much more than low level stuff like LacHydrin 5. Nothing has seemed to work terribly well except for 1 thing. For whatever reason, during summer, he spends a lot of time in the pool and sun. His face clears up almost entirely, then the kp reappears as it gets colder and he is not in the pool. The pool/sun also clears it up on his legs, but never on his arms. I have notice the same for my KP (I only have it on the back of my arms) which clear up entirely in the summer when I spend much time swimming. Not sure if it's the water, the chlorine, the sun, or what. One Derm. said it was likely the water more than the sun. It's so strange because you can actually see the papules rise up out of the skin and come out when he spends a lot of time in the pool. Thnking about getting a heated pool or get him into swimming classes to help. Has anyone else experienced this type of clearing up under these conditions?

My skin always clears up a bit in the summer. It looks really bad in the winter! (purplish and red). I am going to tahiti in 5 days, i'm freaked because my skin is bumpy, but i'm hoping it will clear up while i'm there!

My mom took me to the Derm when I was a baby and he told her to buy me the Neutrogena transparent bar soap. It got rid of my KP in 2 weeks. Consider trying it for your kids.

Also, what works for me now that I'm an adult is the eucalyptus spearmint body lotion sold by bath and body works. I am almost 100% sure it's the eucalyptus ingredient clearing it up, and it cleared it up fairly quickly.

My mom used that soap on me when I was little, and though it didn't make my kp disappear, it was the only bar soap that I was not allergic to when I was a kid. Everything else gave me a terrible itchy rash.

So yes, transparent bar soap = try it!

Yeah, my dermatologist said that he usually doesn't advice his patients to get in the sun, but those of us with KP need it. He said not to overdo it. Like sit out there and burn. He thinks it has something to do with the Vitamin K that the sunlight stimulates in our skin.

Yep, that's what he said. He said he is constantly telling his patients to stay out of the sun and wear sunblock whenever they spend any period of time in the sun, "But, in your case you need it."

I have avidly avoided the sun for many yrs now. Maybe I need to rethink that. I definitely wouldn't sit out there and allow myself to burn by any means.

no sun!

Sencha- I know the sun works for some, but it made my KP that much redder. I think it might work for darker-skinned people. I am pinkish to olive.

I am very fair and it did work for me, but b/c of all the whole sun damage warnings, I have religiously avoided the sun and just tried (mostly in vain) to find ways to reduce/eliminate the KP by way of OTC products.

Of course now, I've had complete success with the bath and body works eucalyptus spearmint body lotion. It looks like Patchouli is going to have success with it, too, by the way she describes the skin just peeling off after the initial uses of it.

Yeah I was surprised. I had swabbed a little on my forearm from the tester and later when I looked at it one of the bumps reacted. Like it dried up and looked like it wanted to remove itself from my skin. Now I've got a lot of bumps and they are not all reacting like this one, especially once I applied it. But, the second time before I went to bed I could feel the bumps coming off. No scratching, no picking. So I will be very curious to see how my skin looks in a weeks time. Even in a month. The scrub is pretty awesome, I used that in the shower today.

Oh yeah, I am very fair as well. My bumps are always red and I tend to get peachy in the sun, but, it looks more of a rosy peach with all the KP.

Patchouli: I responded to you in the other thread about what else I have tried just recently and how 2 bumps just came out super easy with the plug fully intact! (I'm a horrible picker! )

Hmmmm, makes me wonder if the eucalyptus oil in the Philosophy Soul Owner ( aside from the glycolic and salicylic acid) is part of why it works so well for me....

I know, I know. Isn't it sad how victorious you feel removing just one whole plug...coiled hair and all.
