What works for me....

Hello all! I am a long-time lurker on this message board but a newly registered member. I'm a 23 year old female from Wisconsin, USA. I've had KP my entire life. I have it on my face, arms, legs, and bottom. I've been trying to get rid of my KP for as long as I can remember! I tried just about every product out there, including KP Duty (too $$$), AmLactin (too drying), Glytex (no results), and creams mixed by my derm (too $$$). I have found that the products most often recommended for KP didn't work for me. With KP, what works for one person might not work for another. But I thought I would share what has worked for me in getting rid of about 95% of my KP problem. I hope you find this helpful. I will say, first off, that the key to beating KP is being diligent. You have to be consistent with your routine. With that said, here's my routine:

Supplements (These have made the greatest improvement in my skin. If you don't see immediate results, don't give up! It takes 2-3 months):
High-quality multi-vitamin (1/day)
Omega 3/Omega 6 fish oil supplement (1200 mg x 2/day)
Evening Primrose supplement (500 mg x 2/day)

Body wash:
I shower everyday but I only use body wash every other day (except on my underarms). On the days I do not use body wash I instead exfoliate my skin with a loofah and just rinse with water. Body wash is too drying to my skin to be used every day. I use Le Couvent des Minimes Honey and Shea comforting shower gelle (available at Bath & Body Works) and gently exfoliate using a washcloth every other day. The gelle is very gentle and moisturizing.

Topicals:
The lotion that works best for me is Olay Quench for extra-dry skin. (I was skeptical at first too!) It's very moisturizing without being heavy and it lasts all day. (The only down-side is the lotion contains a light shimmer but I'll live with that to keep the results) I apply this lotion after every shower. Sometimes I apply it before I go to bed as well but now that I have my KP under control I don't have too. I also use Carmol 20 at night on my KP areas about twice a week. It seems to help with the redness.

Treatments:
I read about the oil/s****e bath on this site and it has worked wonders for me. I try to do this weekly. I apply Philosophy Soul Owner to my KP areas and let it do it's job for a hour or two. Then I run a warm bath and add olive oil. After soaking for at least 15 minutes, I s****e my skin with the dull side of a plastic knife. The skin rolls of in sheets. It's pretty gross but it exfoliates better than anything else. If I can't do the oil bath weekly, I use a scrub instead (Philosophy The Gingerbread Man). It works well but it is not the miracle that the oil/s****e bath is.

And for special occasions:
Even though my KP is practically gone, I still sometime suffer from the red dots, especially on my legs. So for special occasions when I want to show some leg, I use Le Couvent des Minimes honey and shea skin softening body balm. (available at Bath & Body Works) That stuff not only makes my skin baby soft, but gets rid of the red dots completely for hours! It also smells fab. I would use it all the time because it's truly an amazing product but it's $28 a tub and it's a little sticky for everyday.

Face:
I use Cetaphil cleanser, Neutrogena multi-vitamin acne treatment followed by Complex 15 moisturizer (night), Aveeno ultra-calming moisturizer SPF 15 (every day), and the L'Oreal microdermibrasion kit (twice a week).

I also wanted to let everyone know about www.makeupalley.com. It's a site that contains reviews on thousands of beauty products written by normal people. I have used this site a lot in deciding what products to try. I hope you found this helpful and good luck!!

I would check your local department stores or hi-brand shops at Malls. Those with designer clothing and products sometimes stock Philosophy (well, they do in the UK).

Even if they don't stock it they may be able to order it in for you.

Oh and great post spunky-accident! I think your method proves that controlling KP (which is possible for some) takes dedication with a long term routine. As soon as I move back home and have some money I'm going to try and get a daily and weekly routine going. Thanks for the post!

Ya I saw online that Macy's does have Philosophy products. Unfortunately I live in Canada so i'm out of luck on that one. I tried looking at The Bay and Shoppers Drug Mart, and nothing. I don't know where else I could go, they probably don't have it anywhere in Canada.

i just got the philosophy soul owner's cream and i've been using it for 2 days and i notice a difference. But just a question- i remember some people mentioning that the results started to fade with continued use. DOes anyone have any recommendations about when i should alternate with something else?
