Sal 15% application technique
Hi folks, I'm just starting to use a 15% salycilic acid peel I got from platinumskincare.com. I am wondering if you have recommendations for a) the best type of sal acid preparation and b) the best application method. The solution I'm using is a liquid and dribbles out of the bottle in rapid drops, so I don't really know how much I'm using or supposed to use (i.e., it's meant for the face but I'm using it for both upper arms and thighs). Also, the cotton pads I got at the drugstore seem to disintegrate when I wipe them over my skin--perhaps I need a stronger, more elastic type of pad?--and I'm not sure if I'm applying the sal acid evenly. Any suggestions for a convenient, reliable application technique?
Thanks! Brian

Mine just came today! I got the gauze pads. They were pretty cheap. The only thing is- I"m nervous. No one here talks about salicylic acid toxicity...and I'm wondering if this is too much to use?

I found the sal acid 15% too gross (and expensive) to deal with. My doctor recommended I get my pharm to mix a compound of Urea 40 lotion and Sal Acid 15%, since I use the Urea 40 anyway. An 8oz. bottle of the compound costs $55, which seems reasonable considering the Urea 40 alone is $40 and you're getting both medications in one compound. So, for the past couple of months I've been using the Urea/Sal Acid compound once a day, and plain Urea 40 once a day.
The bad news is, I've had no discernable progress from the Sal Acid. The compound seems to do neither more nor less than the Urea 40 lotion alone. It's annoying, because this is what my doctor had anticipated. Perhaps my skin, with the sal acid compound, is a bit more "crumbly" and easily peelable--but this doesn't translate, for me, into more smoothness or fewer bumps. Still, I have both products, and I'm going to stick a bit longer with the Urea 40/Sal Acid 15% combo.

Oh, and also I leave the Urea/Sal Acid combo on my skin basically for 24 hours, or until the next shower. I will have no qualms about this alleged "toxicity" until someone shows me proof. Dermatologist never said a thing about toxicity.

Interesting! WHy did you find the 15% gross? The liquid itself or the dry skin?
I was using carmol but think it clogged my pores...I started using 18% glycolic and my new shea butter should be here any day now! I think the 6% sal acid and glycolic has made a huge difference...but then again, I get the feeling I don't have it *that* bad... I really need to get to the derm. I really all over the net that you shouldn't be using this much sal acid...but I suppose your derm (I almost typed Vet from some reason LOLOL) would have mentioned. Good to know!!! |
