My experience has been that the dermatological community doesn't think KP is a very serious condition, and therefore not worthy of much research. They keep telling us that KP is hereditary--and no doubt it is--but people on this board report numerous factors that trigger its appearance. Some people have it from birth, some not until after puberty, some only during pregnancy, some worse (and some better) during menses, some worse when overweight, and on and on. There may be MULTIPLE triggers for KP--think of the number of ways people can develop heart disease or cancer. A morbidly obese friend of mine developed ovarian cancer because the size and number of her fat cells caused the estrogen in her body to be metabolized differently. If fat can cause cancer, why not KP? Yes, I know it's a stretch, but I've read enough on this board to at least be open to the idea that there may be multiple factors that trigger KP. For me, that factor appears to be obesity.
