Sometimes I can understand why a doctor can recommend the “benign neglect” approach…. In cases where kp isn’t too severe (like you said your son’s in), there is a chance for kids to “grow out” of it, making paying too much attention to it counter productive. Medically there isn’t too much that you could (or should) do. Children’s skin tends to be much more resilient that adults’ and by adding chemicals you could suppress his natural defensive reaction. Kp or no kp, teenage years are hard but not impossible… with encouragement, confidence and a well-developed self esteem your son should be able to get through his adolescence just fine. When insecurities, doubts and fears get the upper hand, children can develop stress and anxiety disorders. Specifically, children with kp are much more at risk of developing erytophobia, a fear of blushing or looking flushed. This phobia results in severe blushing in reaction to emotions like nervousness or anxiety. I would really encourage self confidence. If your son is already showing signs of emotional triggered blushing, check out this site http://www.angelfire.com/journal2/sadhelp/kp.htm jc
