Just a quick word of caution: the final concentration of salicylic acid in the creme is THREE PERCENT by weight. I saw a couple of posts that indicated they were trying to create a 17.5% concentration. One tube of Carmol 20, at 17.5% salicylic acid, will take the hood off your car. I found an easy way to get the desired end product without having to take organic chemistry courses or have a pharmacist look at you funny. Take one three ounce (85g) tube of Carmol 20. Remove two or three teaspoons of the cream. Place it in a small dish. Add to the dish, one 1/2 ounce bottle of Walgreens (also Walmart, CVS and Dr. Scholl's) Wart Remover. Make sure that it is the strongest variety available (at least 15%, preferably 17.5%). Before adding it, let it sit at room temperature for three to four hours. This will allow the carriers and binders that make it stick to your skin to evaporate. Mix the evaporated Wart Remover with the cream in the dish. Use a medicine syringe (no needle) to put the mixed cream back into the Carmol tube. THEN SHAKE LIKE HELL (to avoid acidic hot spots in the cream) Apply to KP areas. Buff lightly with a moistened (but not wet) loofa sponge. Repeat daily and discontinue if it causes irritation. HOW DOES IT WORK? Urea is a weak acid rich in nitrogen. It is a product that your body's cells produce from metabolizing proteins. The body accumulates urea and sends it to the kidneys where it is turned into urine. You know the rest of that one. The urea changes the permeability of the walls of the skin cells so that the emolients contained in the cream can penetrate faster and more effectively. The salicylic acid is a potent anti-pyretic. That is fancy for anti-irritant. Salicylates stop inflammation by blocking the irritants caused by the inflamation. The most common salicylate is aspirin...the old kind...not Ibuprofen or Tylenol. The loofa sponge is simply a mechanical exfoliant. It just abrades the cells forming the bumps off the skin. So, we have an anti-inflammatory moisturizer that is augmented with mechanical exfoliation... It worked for Brynn. Nay sayers? Isopropyl Myristate is in almost every cosmetic product. Look at your shampoo and cream rinse and soap. It is there and probably hasn't killed you yet. Salicylate poisoning? As a topical preparation, your skin will absorb very little of it to the point it reaches the sub-dermal capillaries and becomes absorbed by the blood. Remember, we humans are waterproof! Richard
